This video exercise, created for the Documentary Filmmaking course in the Master’s program at RUFA, delves into the world of Giorgia Falcinelli, a 24-year-old Twitch streamer. Filmed over the course of a single day, the documentary explores how Giorgia's bedroom transforms from a typical space into a brightly lit streaming studio where she entertains her followers. As she navigates her live session, the film captures not only the technical aspects of her setup but also the emotional complexities of her role. On this particular day, Giorgia finds herself embroiled in a heated online discussion, defending a fellow streamer from body-shaming attacks. This unexpected incident provides a raw glimpse into the darker side of internet fame, highlighting the pressures and challenges that can wear down even the most optimistic personalities. Through this lens, the documentary reflects on the impact of digital life on mental well-being and the fine line between public persona and private struggles.
Statement
In creating this documentary exercise for my Documentary Filmmaking course, I chose to focus on Giorgia Falcinelli and her unique workspace—her streaming studio. What intrigued me was how an ordinary bedroom could be transformed into a vibrant stage for entertainment, yet also become a place of immense pressure and emotional strain. Giorgia, who I've known since high school, has always been full of energy and positivity, but her new career as a Twitch streamer has clearly introduced challenges that test her resilience.
When I filmed her, it happened to be a day filled with unexpected tension. Giorgia found herself caught in the middle of an online drama, defending another streamer from body-shaming remarks. This incident became the focal point of my documentary, offering an unfiltered look at the harsh realities of the online world. It was a stark reminder of how the digital sphere, especially for women, can be both empowering and deeply exhausting.
My aim with this project was to not only document the transformation of Giorgia's space but also to explore the emotional transformations she undergoes in her role as a streamer. By capturing the "before, during, and after" of her live session, I hope to shed light on the often unseen struggles of those who entertain us online, and how the constant demand for content can sometimes overshadow the person behind the screen.
